Westchester County, through the Planning Department, also maintains an inventory of local properties that have been identified to have historical significance. Local organizations such as the Westchester Historical Society work to document and preserve local history and they are active participants in the protection of Westchester’s important historic buildings, districts and landscapes. Historical Society materials are held in the Westchester County Archivesa central repository for the historical public records of Westchester County dating back to 1680, maintained by the County’s Department of Information Technology.

Nominations for these registries are usually made by individual owners, neighborhood associations, historical societies or local governments. Whether nominations originate at a local or state level, all must be approved by a state governmental entity first and are then forwarded to Washington, DC, for final approval and listing in the National Register. Not very often do homes come on the market for sale in Westchester County that are listed on either a Local, State or National Historic Registry.
