Is Your Home Ready for Fall and Winter?

We’re relatively fortunate when it comes to fall and winter temperatures, compared with many parts of the country. Nonetheless there are still some important things you need to do in and around the home as the colder weather approaches.

Here are some key things to check for:

Roofing – Be sure to repair any broken shingles or tiles and clean gutters and downspouts in order to make sure water is directed off your home. Also remember that downspouts should shed rainwater at least three to four feet from foundations, to avoid damaging them.

Windows and Doors – It’s important, and a lot less expensive, to keep your heat inside during the colder months, so check window and door seals. Opening curtains and shades in the day time allows more sunlight in to help heat your home and reduce your bills. Closing them at night helps to keep that heat inside.

Heating System – Don’t wait until there’s a problem with your heating system. Failures have a nasty habit of happening when it’s most difficult to get an engineer on call out, so consider giving the system its annual service now. Furnace filters should generally be changed monthly, or in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. Smart/programmable thermostats help you save money by only running your heater when it’s actually needed.

Landscaping – Now is the time to trim trees to help ensure that there is no property damage during storm conditions. Plants will survive the winter in a healthier condition by applying a layer of mulch around their base and make sure you plant lawns before it becomes too cold. Leaves should also be removed from lawns to prevent dead areas forming. Alternatively you can mow them into the lawn a few times.

Chimneys – If you have a fireplace and chimney, these should be cleaned before fall/winter use to avoid blockages that could cause a fire.
